Muscle fibres are then dissected out and sarcomere length determined microscopically or by light diffraction. James et al. (1995) examined the properties of mouse fast twitch (extensor digitorum longus, EDL) and slow twitch (soleus) muscle using the work loop technique. They related the in vitro muscle performance under different strains, oscillatory cycle frequencies and stimulation regimes to the in vivo operation of the muscles, determined by kinematic analysis of high-speed video sequences of mice during locomotion. During locomotion, tendons will be stretched by the forces exerted upon them. These forces vary cyclically because of the cyclic activity of the muscles attached to them. The more compliant a tendon is, the more the muscle attached to it will need to shorten to produce a given action. When limbs att egl inc is t don wil ugh per com

In vivo measurement of human wrist extensor muscle sarcomere length changes.
1. Human extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) sarcomere length was measured intraoperatively in five subjects using laser diffraction. 2. In a separate cadaveric study, ECRB tendons were loaded to the muscle's predicted maximum tetanic tension, and tendon strain was measured to estimate active sarcomere shortening at the expense of tendon lengthening. 3. As the wrist joint was passively flexed...

A structural model was developed to explain sarcomere shortening at the expense of tendon lengthening in the frog semitendinosis (ST) muscle-tendon system. The model was based on the data of Lieber et al. [Am. J. Physiol. 261, C86-C92 (1991)], who determined the relationship between the sarcomere length, tendon load (as a fraction of maximum isometric tension) and tendon, bone-tendon junction (...

Objective-To determine the effect of ultrasound therapy on hydroxyproline (HP) content in superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) in horses.Design - Experimental in vivo study.Animals - Eight adult castrated horses.Procedure- The mediocaudal surface of right metatarsal bone in was exposed and after complete separation of SDFT, it was splitted (striking 15 times) in full thickness in longitudin...
متن کاملChanges of the Patellar Tendon Moment arm Length in Different Knee Angles: A Biomechanical in Vivo Study
Patellar tendon moment arm length (PTma) changes at different knee flexion angles have not been determined in invivo studies. We aimed to determine PTma in four different knee angles using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) topredict in vivo changes in the moment arm length from different knee angles during running.PTma was measured as the perpendicular distance from muscle–tend...
متن کاملEffect of muscle tension during tendon transfer on sarcomerogenesis in a rabbit model.
Sarcomere number change was investigated in an animal model of tendon transfer. In 9 adult New Zealand white rabbits, the flexor digitorum longus muscle was cut distally and transferred and woven into the tibialis anterior tendon. Ankles were then immobilized for 3 weeks in 75 degrees flexion. Transferred flexor digitorum longus muscles were harvested and complete architectural analysis was per...
